VEDANTA
Vedanta PLC is London listed FTSE 100 Mining Corporation which has brought death and destruction to thousands across India. It is owned by an Indian tycoon Anil Agarwal, the UK's 17th richest man whose personal wealth grew by 583% during the recession according to 2010 figures. Agarwal's connections to the UK politicians have enabled him to evade millions of pounds of tax by using Jersey and Bahamas based tax havens. Vedanta's bauxite mining has killed hundred of mainly Adivasi (indigenous) people in India in accidents, police firings, forced displacement, injury and illness. It has displaced thousands of families and destroyed the environment - contaminating drinking water sources, causing floods of toxic waste and destroying tribal forest areas.

UK GOVERNMENT IN BED WITH VEDANTA AND CAIRN
Vedanta is now buying Cairn India - a major subsidiary of Edinburgh based Cairn Energy - they are drilling next to the most bio-diverse coral reefs off the Indian coast at the Mannar Basin in Sri Lanka. With their appalling track record, can Vedanta be trusted with oil? When the Indian government held up the Cairn-Vedanta deal by investigating Vedanta's ability to manage strategic oil fields, David Cameron personally intervened, urging India to speed up "unnecessary delays". Vedanta is a UK company and should be held to account here in Briatin for its multiple environmental and social crimes. We must stop Cairn India takeover before it is too late. A campaign has already been launched to Foil Vedanta!

Edinburgh-born Roderick Graham was educated at the Royal High School of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh before serving with the Royal Army Education Corps as staff officer for education at the East Africa Command.

On leaving the army, he went on to pursue a long and varied career in television and radio as a writer, freelance director and producer. He produced the double Emmy award-winner Elizabeth R in 1971, and from 1974 to 1977 he was the producer of fifty-four episodes of the long-running BBC police series Z Cars. He was appointed head of drama at BBC TV Scotland and produced and directed A Scots Quair, Boswell for the Defence and Sutherland's Law among many others. He eventually returned to freelance directing and worked on the well-known TV series Juliet Bravo, One by One and All Creatures Great and Small. He also wrote and directed two series of children's archaeology for BBC TV, seven radio plays and one four-part radio biography of Sidney Smith.

Roderick Graham has also taught writing and directing at Napier and Leeds Metropolitan Universities, Edinburgh College of Art and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He is the author of the critically acclaimed John Knox: Democrat (Hale, 2001) and The Great Infidel: A Life of David Hume (Tuckwell Press, 2004, paperback edition by Birlinn, 2005). In 2007 Birlinn will be publishing Roderick’s new book, An Accidental Tragedy: The Life of Mary, Queen of Scots. In this readable and insightful biography, Roderick Graham challenges many of the traditionally held perceptions of the Scottish queen, and examines her roles as a woman, a politician and a monarch. 'Funny, snappy, and popular... Helen Zaltzman and Olly Mann have risen above the morass of homemade radio shows on the internet.' Radio Times

Helen Zaltzman was born in 1980 and spent her formative years in Tunbridge Wells being academically precocious but also pathologically lazy. Hence her brain is full of a wide range of facts with absolutely no knowledge to back them up. Highlights of her 'career' as a self-employed something-or-other include writing for Radio 4's Now Show, being turned down for her dream job as an etymologist at the OED, and creating the world's largest inflatable Boggle set.

Olly Mann was born in 1981, the day after Cats opened in the West End. An only child, he spent his schooldays muttering to himself pretending to host a radio show, which turned out to be ideal training for podcasting. He has worked as a journalist and TV producer, and is now a 'freelance broadcaster' living in Highbury.

Helen and Olly both appear regularly on Radio 2, Radio 5 Live and Sky News and have written for the Observer, The Times, the Daily Telegraph and Word Magazine.

Joe List is a comic-book artist and illustrator whom Helen and Olly roped into doing this book after he entered the Answer Me This! Photoshop Competition, in which he came fifth. You can see more of his stuff at joelist.co.uk, and on his blog, The Annotated Weekender, where he defaces copies of the Guardian Weekend magazine.

Johanna Skibsrud was born in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1980. Her first book of poetry, Late Nights With Wild Cowboys, was published by Gaspereau Press of Kentville, Nova Scotia in 2008 and shortlisted for the Gerald Lampert Award for the best first book of poetry by a Canadian poet. A second book of poetry, I Do Not Think That I Could Love a Human Being, was published in April, 2010, also by Gaspereau Press. Her debut novel, The Sentimentalists, was awarded the 2010 Scotiabank Giller Prize. Johanna currently lives between Paris and Montreal.

Luke Williams was born in 1977. He grew up in Fife, Scotland, and now divides his time between Edinburgh and London. The Echo Chamber is his first novel.

Miriam Toews was born in 1964 in the small Mennonite town of Steinbach, Manitoba. She has published four novels and a memoir of her father, and is the recipient of numerous literary awards including the Governor General's Award, the McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award (twice), and the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. In 2007 she made her screen debut in the film Luz Silenciosa. She was nominated for Best Actress at Mexico’s Ariel Awards for her performance. In a book that takes a true story and shapes it into a beautiful piece of fiction, Italian novelist Fabio Geda describes Enaiatollah’s remarkable five-year journey from Afghanistan to Italy where he finally managed to claim political asylum aged fifteen. His ordeal took him through Iran, Turkey and Greece, working on building sites in order to pay people-traffickers, and enduring the physical misery of dangerous border crossings squeezed into the false bottoms of lorries or trekking across inhospitable mountains. A series of almost implausible strokes of fortune enabled him to get to Turin, find help from an Italian family and meet Fabio Geda, with whom he became friends.

The result of their friendship is this unique book in which Enaiatollah’s engaging, moving voice is brilliantly captured by Geda’s subtly simple storytelling. Born in Turin in 1972, Fabio Geda is an Italian novelist who works with children in difficulties. Tommy McKearney was a senior member of the Provisional IRA from the early 1970s until his arrest in 1977. Helen Fitzgerald is one of thirteen children and grew up in Victoria, Australia. She nows lives in Glasgow with her husband and two children. Helen has worked as a parole officer and social worker for over ten years. Her first novel, Dead Lovely, was published in 2007. She will read from her latest novel, The Donor.

Doug Johnstone is a freelance journalist and the author of two previous novels, Tombstoning and The Ossians, described by Irvine Welsh as 'a drug-fuelled, counter-clockwise state-of-the-nation rock 'n' roll tour' and by Ian Rankin as 'a powerful and moving commentary on the country and its defining myths'. His latest novel is Smokeheads.

D. D. Johnston is a working-class stiff, a former burger-flipper, and a lecturer in creative writing at the University of Gloucestershire. Peace, Love & Petrol Bombs is his first novel.

From Little Britain's Vicky Pollard to the demonization of Jade Goody, media and politicians alike dismiss as feckless, criminalized and ignorant a vast, underprivileged swathe of society whose members have become stereotyped by one, hate-filled word: chavs.

In this groundbreaking investigation, Owen Jones explores how the working class has gone from "salt of the earth" to "scum of the earth." Exposing the ignorance and prejudice at the heart of the chav caricature, one based on the media's inexhaustible obsession with an indigent white underclass, he portrays a far more complex reality. Moving through Westminster's lobbies and working-class communities from Dagenham to Dewsbury Moor, Jones reveals the increasing poverty and desperation of communities made precarious by wrenching social and industrial change, and all but abandoned by the aspirational, society-fragmenting policies of Thatcherism and New Labour. The chav stereotype, he argues, is used by governments as a convenient figleaf to avoid genuine engagement with social and economic problems, and to justify widening inequality.

Based on a wealth of original research, and wide-ranging interviews with media figures, political opinion-formers and workers, Chavs is a damning indictment of the media and political establishment, and an illuminating, disturbing portrait of inequality and class hatred in modern Britain.

Owen Jones has worked in the British Parliament as a trade union lobbyist and parliamentary researcher. He is writing a PhD on the history of blue-collar America and the rise of the New Right. He lives in London.
